Removal of Warts and Skin Tags

Fulguration is a simple, effective, and safe procedure for removing common skin growths such as warts and skin tags. The treatment uses a high-frequency electrical current to generate a spark that heats and destroys the unwanted tissue on the surface of the skin. The process is performed with a specialized medical probe and is often completed in a single, short office visit.

What are warts and skin tags?

Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), warts are non-cancerous growths that can appear anywhere on the body. They have a rough, bumpy surface and ca sometimes be contagious, spreading to other areas or other people.

Skin Tags: These are benign, fleshy growths that often resemble a small piece of hanging skin. They typically develop in areas where skin folds or rubs against itself, such as the neck, armpits, and groin.

Benefits of Fulguration

Minimally invasive: the procedure does not require large incisions or stitches.

Minimal Bleeding: The heat from the electrical current helps to cauterize the tissue, minimizing bleeding during the procedure.

Quick and Convenient: Treatment is typically fast, and multiple lesions can be addressed in one session.

Cosmetic Improvement: For those who find warts or skin tags bothersome or unsightly, fulguration offers a simple solution to restore smooth skin.

Your doctor will explain the risks and benefits of having the procedure and alternative treatment. Before signing the consent form make sure all your questions have been answered so that you understand what may happen.

What to Expect During a Fulguration Procedure
  1. Preparation: The treatment area will be cleaned locally anesthetized with lidocaine to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
  2. Procedure: Using a precise, pen-like instrument, your provider will direct the electrical current to the targeted growths. The spark created will burn and destroy the wart or skin tag, leaving a small, dry, and easy managed wound.
  3. Aftercare: Post-treatment, the area will form a scab, which will heal and fall off within one to two weeks. You will be given simple aftercare instructions to keep the area clean and covered by a band-aid to protect from infection and promote proper healing. Call our office if you develop local pain, swelling, redness or drainage in the treated area. These may mean a wound got infected.
