In-office pulmonary function testing (PFT): Breathe easier, live better
Your lung health is vital for your overall well-being. If you experience persistent shortness of breath, a chronic cough, or wheezing, our in-office pulmonary function testing (PFT) can provide a comprehensive and accurate assessment of your respiratory health. We bring this essential diagnostic tool directly to our practice to give you clear answers and a personalized path to better breathing, all in a convenient and familiar setting.
What is a pulmonary function test (PFT)?
A PFT is a group of non-invasive breathing tests that measure how well your lungs are working. The most common of these is called spirometry, which measures how much air you can breathe in and out, and how quickly and easily you can move that air. The information gathered helps us to:
- Diagnose the cause of symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.
- Assess lung conditions such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and other respiratory issues.
- Determine the severity of an existing lung condition.
- Track the progression of lung disease over time.
- Evaluate how well your current medications or treatment plan are working.
- Determine how lung function may affect your ability to tolerate certain medical procedures or surgeries.
What can you expect during the test?
Your comfort and understanding are our top priorities. During the simple and painless test, a trained technician will guide you through each step:
- Preparation: You will be asked to sit comfortably and wear a nose clip to ensure that all air goes through your mouth.
- Breathing into the spirometer: You will place your lips securely around a sterile mouthpiece connected to the spirometer machine.
- Following instructions: The technician will ask you to breathe in and out in specific ways, such as taking a deep breath and then exhaling as hard and fast as you can.
- Completion: The process is repeated several times to ensure accurate and consistent results.
The entire test typically takes less than 30 minutes, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterward.
Preparing for your PFT
For the most accurate results, we recommend following these simple guidelines before your appointment:
- Do not smoke for at least one hour prior to the test.
- Avoid a large meal or heavy exercise within 30 minutes of your appointment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict your chest.
- Your doctor may advise you to stop taking certain medications before the test.
